Next time you’re down with the flu, you shouldn’t be so quick to run to the drug store to pick up the latest flu medicine that promises to get you feeling well again.

Instead, you may just want to consider an alternative therapy – the use of onions!  You may have heard it from your grandma before; onions are a powerful way to fight against the flu and get back on your feet again.

But, is there really any truth to this? Is your grandma correct and onions are a solution to consider? Let’s look at the facts that you need to know.

Onions Provide Disease Fighting Nutrients

Onions are in fact a powerful weapon in the fight against the flu because they are going to provide you with natural antimicrobial properties, which will help to strengthen your immune system.

Your immune system is the primary system in the body that is responsible for removing the unwanted germs from your body that wreak havoc on your health and bring about the flu symptoms that you’re experiencing.

If you’re leading an active lifestyle and are going to the gym on a very regular basis, the fact that you are doing these workouts means that your immune system will be more stressed.  This makes it even more important that you’re doing whatever you can to improve your immune system function.

In addition to the antimicrobial effects they provide, they’ll also provide you with antifungal effects, which can decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth that cause cavity formation.

So as an extra added benefit, take note of that one.

Bone Building

Another key health benefit that onions will provide is that they assist with the formation of strong bones. They contain a certain flavonoid known as ‘Quercentin’, which is what gives the onion that yellowish-brown color.

This flavonoid will help to strengthen the bones and make sure that you reduce your risk of stress fractures or other bone injuries.

Asthma Control

Onions are going to also be rich in sulfur-containing compounds that will inhibit certain compounds in the body such as cyclooxygenase that will trigger the airways to start tightening and you to start having difficulty breathing.

This can also cause inflammation to occur, making it that much more difficult for you to breathe as well.

Cardiovascular Support

Finally, the last benefit that onions will provide is protection against cardiovascular disease.  Having a high intake of onions in your diet is going to help to keep your cardiovascular system young and strong and can also help to reverse the signs of aging.

All in all, there are so many benefits to be had from including this tear-inducing vegetable that you can’t afford to miss out on it.  Plus, it’ll dramatically enhance the taste and flavor from your foods, so that’s one further benefit to be well aware of.

So have a good look over your meal plan and make sure that you are adding onions into your dishes wherever possible.

All in all, onions are a great preventative measure when it comes to the flu or falling ill but they wont hurt your chances of getting better should you already be sick.
