How To Cook Fiddleheads

One vegetable that some people have never even heard of, never mind actually have tried is fiddleheads.  Fiddleheads is a nutrient dense vegetable, and only comes in at 34 calories per 100 gram serving.  It’ll provide a powerful dose of protein in those 34 calories, with 4.6 grams per serving.

The remaining calories will come from carbohydrates, as the total fat content is just 0.4 of a gram.

How To Cook Fiddleheads

Perhaps one of the easiest and fastest methods to cook your fiddleheads is through steaming them.  Before getting started, you’ll want to make sure that you clean them thoroughly. Do this by placing them in a bowl of cold water and then rinsing them with your hands.

Once finished, remove from the water and drain them as best as possible. Note that this vegetable cannot be eaten raw, so don’t nibble on any at this stage.

Next, place the fiddleheads in a steamer basket and then add water into the pot (or steamer if you are using an actual steamer).

Make sure when you place the basket containing the fiddleheads into the pot they are not submerged in water or they won’t steam properly.

Bring the water to a boil, cover, and then step for about 10-12 minutes.  Once finished, remove and set on a plate, adding a small amount of vinegar if desired for flavor. Note that these work great served as a replacement for asparagus in any other recipe, so that should give you some creative ideas with how you can incorporate these into your diet plan.
