BENEFITS OF APPLES:
Now that it’s back to school time, and the apple is always associated with “back to school” and teachers (always give the teacher an apple on the first day of school), I thought I would devote this week’s Thursday Lean Tip to the apple.
As the old proverb goes “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” and there’s a reason for this famous proverb. This delicious fruit is filled with Phytonutrients that function as antioxidants, supporting our heart health and help prevent a host of diseases.
Apples are also an excellent source of immune-strengthening vitamin C. Several studies have shown that that apples not only help lower the risk of asthma, but also help lower the risk of many forms of cancer.
Additional Health Benefits of Apples:
Apples can help REDUCE CHOLESTEROL. One medium apple provides five grams of fibre which is healthier, has less calories and is much more satiating than most breakfast cereals! Apples are one of best sources of pectin, a soluble fibre that reduces cholesterol. Pectin prevents cholesterol from building up in the lining of blood vessel walls, thus reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
According to new research from Germany, apples can offer PROTECTION AGAINST COLON CANCER. When the natural fiber in apples ferments in the colon, it produces chemicals that help fight the formation of cancer cells.
Apples can PROTECT BONES. Researchers believe that a flavanoid called phloridzin, found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.
Star Apple Nutrients:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
- Vitamin A
- Potassium
- Fiber
How Apples Help You Lose Weight:
Not only are apples low in calories, they are also full of fiber including both soluble and insoluble fiber. Fiber helps you avoid overeating because it fills you up, helping you feel full for longer.
